Willy Beamin favourite to win the Discovery Handicap at Aqueduct
The Grade 3 Discovery Handicap has reeled in 6 sophomore colts and geldings to battle it out over two turns, and among them is the versatile, James A. Riccio’s Willy Beamin, who will be eager to bounce back from his defeat in Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park.
The Grade 3, $150,000 Discovery Handicap will be run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct Racetrack, and the Suave colt will be will be the 121 highweight breaking from the outside post number 6 under jockey Alan Garcia for trainer Richard Dutrow Jr, spotting the field four to six pounds.
"He's good, real good," said Dutrow. "I wish I were doing as good as he is. He drew pretty good, though, and hopefully things will go his way on Saturday."
The 3-year-old gelding strung together a 6 race win streak, including the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga racecourse over a distance of seven furlongs on 25 August, 2012.
The rampant runner overhauled the likes of Fort Loudon in second, and Unbridled’s Note in third, while he covered the distance in 1 minute and 22.02 seconds.
However, his 6-race win streak was snapped by, Politicallycorrect, on 30 September in the Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park where Willy Beamin finished second over a distance of 1 1/8 miles, as the winner turned in the distance in 1 minute and 50.23 seconds.
Prior to the King’s Bishop Stakes victory, registered stakes win against other New York-bred sophomores, starting from the seven furlong long Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont Park on 24 June. He defeated Brigand in second and Night Maneuver in third with the winning time of 1 minute and 22.44 seconds.
Next up was Saratoga, the 1 1/8 mile long Albany Stakes on 22 August, where he was good enough to reel in Zivo, and post another impressive time of 1 minute and 50.34 seconds on the dirt course, as Fox Rules managed a third place finish on the board.
The 7 to 5 morning line favourite, will have to be wary of the Street Cry colt, Our Entourage, who posted his first stakes win, the Temperence Hill Stakes at Belmont Park, two starts back on 21 October.
