Willy Beamin will look to put his winning streak on the line in the Oklahoma Derby
Shippers across the country are swamping the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park, set to get underway on 30 September, 2012. The 1 1/8 mile dirt event is restricted for 3-year-old colts and geldings, and in the scarcity of events restricted to 3-year-olds, the Oklahoma Derby presents itself as the main target.
At entry time, 10 runners were unveiled to take part in the Oklahoma Derby, and the one who is currently making some noise up north is also among the few who are expected to do well at Remington Park.
Willy Beamin, the New York bred gelding by Suave will put his 6 race winning streak on the line in the Oklahoma Derby against the likes of Prospective and Daddy Nose Best.
Trained by Richard Dutrow Jr. for owner James A. Riccio, Willy Beamin is currently exiting a well-fought victory in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga at about seven furlongs, where he defeated the strubborn, Fort Loudon in second and Unbridled’s Note in third.
He won the King’s Bishop Stakes after winning the Albany Stakes also at Saratoga, but in distance it was around 1 1/8 miles. Willy Beamin will make his first start after a terrific run at Saratoga from 22 to 25 August.
On the flipside, the two equally accomplished, who will look to snap Willy Beamin’s winning streak are Prospective and Daddy Nose Best.
John C. Oxley’s 3-year-old colt, Prospective put together a good run after a horrible run in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby. He started at Woodbine after the Kentucky Derby disappointment, and emerged victorious in the Victoria Park Stakes.
Mark Casse trained then downed the Grade 3 Ohio Derby in convincing fashion at Thistledown when he was cut back to 1 1/16 miles from 1 1/8 miles, but continue his good run of form when stepped up in class, and disappointed in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes by finished eighth.
Cathy and Robert Zollars’ Daddy Nose Best last won on the Kentucky Derby trail, when he landed the Grade 3 Sunland Derby, but failed to make an impact in the high profile races that followed up.
