Wilson, Felix and Duru emerge triumphant in Round 1 of Mr Price Pro Ballito – Surfing news
Australia’s Julian Wilson, Brazil’s Messias Felix and France’s Joan Duru made their way through into the second round (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito after emerging triumphant in their respective
Round 1 (Round of 96) heats that went down at Ballito in South Africa on Tuesday, July 2, 2013.
South Africa’s Dylan Lightfoot finished behind Wilson in second place during the 13th heat, thus getting their place in the second round. Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas finished in third place, while America’s Gabe Kling finished fourth. Both the surfers consequently
found themselves out of the race for the event title.
The 14th heat saw Australia’s Chris Friend advance to Round 2 after finishing behind Felix. Hawaii’s Keanu Asing and Canary Island’s Jonathan Gonzalez rounded out the bottom-two positions as well, thus getting removed from the competition.
While Duru claimed victory in the 15th heat, Australia’s Dion Atkinson finished in second place to accompany him into the second round. South Africa’s Michael February finished third, while America’s Conner Coffin finished in fourth place. The bottom-two
finished resulted in their elimination from the competition.
A swell in the range of one-metre graced the primary event site on the opening day of the competition, allowing the surfers to put their exquisite skills on display as they carried out the hunt for big score.
Wilson, a ASP World Championship Tour contender, collected a 5.50 off his first business-wave in the 13th heat and went on to add an additional 7.00 points to his account in the dying minutes of the heat, thus registering a decisive heat-total of 12.50 points.
Lightfoot made the Round 2 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 10.46 points, which served to take him through into the next round. Dantas finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.40 points, while Kling had to settle for bottom place after
registering a heat-total of 9.80 points.
The 14th heat saw Felix claiming an excellent come-from-behind victory after scoring a 7.33 off his first business-wave and backing it up with a 5.43-point ride in the final minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 12.76 points.
Friend finished in second place with a heat-total of 12.10 points to successfully extend his life in the event. Asing and Gonzalez registered a heat-total of 7.53 points, which consequently led to their elimination from the competition.
Duru walked away with a convincing victory in the 15th heat after registering a heat-total of 15.33 points, which comprised of an 8.50 and 6.83-point ride.
Atkinson finished in second place with a heat-total of 12.84 points to accompany the Frenchman into the next round. February and Coffin, however, got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 11.93 and 8.26 points respectively.
