Wilson Ramos’ RBI helps Washington Nationals defeat Chicago Cubs 5-4 – MLB Update
Washington Nationals’ catcher, Wilson Ramos had a notable day with the bat as he went 2-for-3 with an average of .254 and hit a final RBI in the Nationals 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs at National Park, Washington on July 6.
The Nationals started well as they blasted two runs in the first inning to get a 2-0 lead. Danny Espinosa struck a two-run homer (390 feet) towards right-field and Roger Bernadina scored one run. On the other side, the Cubs posted two runs at the top of
the second inning to level the game 2-all. Carlos Pena hit a solo homer (403 feet) to right-field and Geovany Soto added a tie run on the score-board.
Third and fourth innings passed without any run as the batters did not play the mix-up of curve and fastballs. Reed Johnson singled to left-field but Starlin Castro flied out to right-field and Soto flied out to centre-field without providing any run at
the top of the third inning. Similarly, in the fourth inning, the Nationals’ batters also got out as Jayson Werth was struck-out swinging and Ian Desmond flied out to right-field.
The Nationals’ offence had managed to go-ahead 4-2 in the fifth inning when Ryan Zimmerman homered (379 feet) towards left-field and Espinosa scored a single run. The game was again tied 4-4 in the sixth inning when Aramis Ramirez struck a two-run homer
(442 feet) towards centre-field and Castro contributed a tie-run.
During the seventh inning, Michael Morse added a tie-breaking run when Ramos hit a sacrifice fly towards the pitcher and gave the Nationals a 5-4 lead. The last two innings were score-less as Ramirez was struck-out swinging and Soto struck-out looking at
the top of the eighth inning.
Morse said, “Man, it was scary. But you know what? In the end, it worked out. He got the bunt down.” At the same time, Ramos commented on Morse and said, “After he scored, he did `You did good, you did good.' But I almost killed him.”
The Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson said, “I must be brain-dead. I don't think I've ever squeezed. I don't really like to bunt that much."
The Cubs missed the scoring opportunities in the ninth inning when Marlon Byrd was struck-out looking and Alfonso Soriano flied out towards left-field. However, the Nationals were on top as they led-off 3-0 in a four-game series at Washington.
