Wilson Ramos’ family traumatized after kidnapping incident – MLB Update
There was no development on Venezuela’s brightest baseball talent and Washington Nationals’ catcher Wilson Ramos’ kidnapping case as friends and family remained anxious and continued to pray for his safety.
Fresh from his rookie season, Ramos was kidnapped on Wednesday, November 9, soon after returning from an outing at the beach with relatives. He was scheduled to debut for the Aragua Tigers on Wednesday, November 16 in Venezuela’s winter league, but it seems
as if that option will not materialise this year.
Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez ordered a high-profile investigation in a bid to bring back the country’s top baseball prospect and the entire nation is now worried for the safety of Ramos, who had planned for Christmas and reunions with family and friends
this winter.
Ramos was kidnapped from the yard in front of his home at around 7:00 p.m. local time by heavily armed men. A friend of the family was shattered by the incident and stated that this is one thing no one could have imagined.
Explaining the condition of the family, the friend said, “He grew up here, he felt calm here, and he felt safe. His mother is now just crying, and then for a moment she calms down. They are very religious, evangelicals, very, very religious. . . . They are
very united. They always look out for each other.”
Ramos’ agent Gustavo Marcano confirmed that the family is yet to receive a demand for ransom and that the family is extremely disturbed by the incident. Marcano asserted that everyone, including himself, is waiting for the phone to ring and that Wilson’s
safety remains the highest priority for every concerned person.
In Venezuela, kidnapping for ransom has become extremely popular and the trend is on the increase with 895 official kidnappings last year. It is anticipated by the officials that the culprits are related to a criminal organisation and it is expected that
they might demand ten to 20-million-dollars in ransom.
It is vital to mention that Ramos earned 415-thousand-dollars during 2011 and paying an amount as hefty as this will not be a possibility. The Nationals are yet to make a comment on this situation and it will be vital to see how things unfold.
