Wilson Valdez, Placido Polanco shine as Philadelphia Phillies shutout New York Mets 11-0 – Part 1
Wilson Valdez and Placido Polanco both put in a tremendous performance as they combined for seven RBIs as the Philadelphia Phillies humiliated the New York Mets 11-0 on Thursday, April 7 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
The Phillies also won the three game series as they managed to win two games over the Mets. Philadelphia completely dominated the game, as the Mets were unable to put up a single run throughout the entire game.
Wilson Valdez was definitely on fire on the field as he had a career high four hits, scored three runs and two doubles with three RBIs. Valdez put in a brilliant effort as he played aggressively and dominated the Mets.
Placido Polanco also had an impressive day as he managed to get in four runs for the Phillies. Raul Ibanez chipped in with a brilliant two-run homer in the seventh inning. The Phillies seemed to have come together as a team as their offence was unstoppable.
The Mets did not have any answers as they struggled to contain the powerful Phillies’ batting line-up.
Roy Halladay had a tremendous day with his pitching, as he struck-out seven and only allowed six hits in the seven innings that he pitched.
Many were concerned that the Phillies might struggle without Chase Utley and Jayson Werth. However, Valdez was brilliant as he took control of the game and dominated early on.
"We know he's not here right now," Valdez said of Utley. "Hopefully when he comes back, he's 100 percent. But we have to keep playing. When he gets back, we'll be better."
The Phillies are showing great promise at this early stage of the regular season. The true depth of their line-up is beginning to shine as even with the loss of two of their top performers to injury, the team still managed to dominate and shut-out the struggling
New York Mets.
The Mets were just unable to get their offence going against the pitching strength of the Halladay. On the Mets’ defence, Jonathon Niese had a miserable day on the mound, as he gave up eight hits and six runs from his four innings. Niese struggled throughout
the game as the Phillies’ batting line-up went after him early.
Philadelphia is showing true signs of greatness as their performance against the Mets showed. The team is working together and all the players are putting in the numbers to prove themselves worthy of starting. With the likes of Utley and Werth missing from
the Phillies’ line-up, guys like Valdez and Polanco are stepping it up and showing their batting strength. The phenomenal pitching line-up of the Phillies can decimate any of the top teams on a given day.
