Wilson Valdez, Placido Polanco shine as Philadelphia Phillies shutout New York Mets 11-0 – Part 2
The Philadelphia Phillies managed to completely dominate and shut-out the New York Mets 11-0 on Thursday, April 7 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Roy Halladay had a brilliant pitching performance as he completely contained the Mets’ offence from scoring even a single run in the seven innings that he pitched. Halladay had good support from his offence as Wilson Valdez and Placido Polanco combined for
seven RBIs. This gave a comfortable breathing space for Halladay to pitch in.
"When you get a lot of runs, it makes it easier to be aggressive," Halladay said.
The Mets were disappointed as they were unable to find any solution against Halladay’s pitching brilliance. The entire batting line-up of the Mets seemed to struggle against the Phillies’ pitching. The team was completely shut-out as their confidence began
to slip.
It's not the way you want to start the season before you go home," Mets’ manager Terry Collins said.
The Phillies are sending out clear signals to all the top teams throughout the League that they are on top of their game. The tremendous batting and pitching prowess that they put on display in this series against the New York Mets has many people talking.
The Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel was pleased with the performance of the team.
"It's better than I expected," manager Charlie Manuel said. "But at the same time, we played six games. I don't want to talk about it. It's best not to talk about it and let it happen."
The Mets will be reeling, as they did manage to put in an impressive performance in the first game of the series, as they struggled in the second and the third game to eventually lose the series. The inconsistent performance of the Mets seems to be stemming
from the lack of confidence against the teams with strong pitching line-ups.
The Phillies will be happy at the performances of Valdez and Polanco as Chase Utley and Jayson Werth are out with injuries. Valdez had a tremendous game as completely dominated the Mets early. If the team continues to work hard and perform as they did against
the Mets, they will be looking as very strong contenders for a possible post-season spot at the end of the regular season.
The 11-0 shut-out performance by the Phillies has given a tremendous boost to the team, as they are brimming full of confidence. However, for the Mets this loss will be difficult to absorb as they were unable to score a single run during the entire game.
It will be interesting to see how far the Phillies can carry and maintain their winning momentum in their match-up. The Mets will be looking to improve their efforts and make some internal changes to their line-up to get the maximum from their players.
