Wilt Chamberlin’s sexual exploits: 20,000 women in a lifetime
Wilt Chamberlain was a phenomenal basketball player in the NBA from the late 1950s until the early 70s. He dominated the sport during his career and the NBA even changed the rules to stop his immense presence in the game. The most interesting thing about
the tall basketball player though was that in his 1991 autobiography he claimed to have had s*x with 20,000 different women in his life. Now this is a very tall claim; it is an absurd number but we are unable to say whether it is true or not. So why would
he make such a claim and what benefit would it give to is life? This interesting man’s life needs to be looked at in more detail.
This fantastic player started life in 1936 in Philadelphia and was one of nine children. He was a very tall child and stood at 6 feet 11 inches when he started high school. Due to his immense height he had a natural advantage over his peers and fellow basketball
players throughout his life. He was renowned for his ability to score baskets, his strength and his shot blocking talent. His high school career was so good that over 200 universities in America wanted to have him. Some offered him gifts, some full scholarships
but in the end he decided to attend the University of Kansas. Segregation was a big part of Kansas and it initially affected the basketball player but he stopped caring about the signs which prohibited black people from going to certain areas and he went wherever
he wanted. As a result of this, the area where he lived started to treat black people better over the years.
He started his professional career playing for the exhibition team, the Harlem Globetrotters and then moved onto playing with the Philadelphia Warriors in the NBA. During his career he also played for the 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers. During his basketball
playing days, he scored 31,419 points in total which equated to around 30 points per game on average. He also managed to get 23,924 rebounds which translates to almost 30 on average per game and he also made over 4500 assists. He is famous for becoming one
of the few players to be made an MVP in their rookie year. The 7 foot 1 inch player also scored 100 points in one game and he even managed to get two NBA titles in his career. He left one of the greatest legacies in the history of basketball and even contributed
singlehandedly to the rise of the African American sports star. But he is also known for his claim of having slept with more women than most men meet or even see in their whole lives.
At the age of 55, Chamberlain made a claim that is now almost as famous as he was. In his 1991 autobiography, A View from Above, he stated that he had slept with 20,000 women in his life. He instantly became the object of jokes and jibes but he did not care.
Chamberlain was a confirmed bachelor throughout his life and this claim of his has over the years been scrutinised and dissected. The way the numbers work out, because Wilt’s career was constantly measured in numbers, is that if this claim is to be believed
then he would have had to have s*x with 500 women a year. That works out to be 1 woman every 17.5 hours of every single day from the age of 15 up till the age of 55 when the book was published.
Some of those who knew him closely stated that he had a voracious sexual appetite and was known to have s*x with numerous women but a woman every 17.5 hours is a very tall claim to justify. People and fans are free to make up their own minds about whether
he was able to do this or not but it brought about some serious criticisms as well. The famous tennis player Arthur Ashe, came down hard on the Big Dipper as he was known, saying that he was fuelling racial stereotypes about black men and it was totally unnecessary.
After Ashe died of AIDS, Chamberlain changed his tune and started preaching abstinence to young people.
He probably made the claim to compensate for being rejected by women in his youth and it also fuelled his ego. He was able to get away with a crazy statement like that because people respected him and men probably envied him and his ability to bed so many
women. Wilt died in 1999 from heart failure leaving behind a huge legacy in basketball and a massive claim whose veracity that is still a mystery.
