Wimbeldon2010: Venus Williams heads into the Quarterfinal
Born on June 17, 1980, the American tennis sensation, Venus Ebony Starr Williams is listed as number two in the World’s singles rankings and number one in the doubles. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has ranked her as the number one player in the world for three times in her career so far. Venus became the top ranked player for the first time back in 2002.
Williams is undoubtedly one of the strongest and finest base line players from the women’s side combined with an aggressive style of game. The kind of tennis that she plays suits the grass surface more as compared to the clay courts which is also proved in her victories at Wimbledon. She won the title for a total of five times so far in the grass court Grand Slam Tournament. Over the years, Venus William has worked extremely hard on her volley that has proved highly effective for the American.
As far as the ongoing Wimbledon is concerned, Venus Williams has made her way into the quarterfinal match of the grass court tournament by crushing Jarmila Groth in their fourth round encounter yesterday. Hence, the second seeded player advanced where as in another match, the former top ranked player Jankovic collapsed in her quarter final battle with Vera Zvonareva at the All England Club.
Jankovic at the time of withdraw was down with 6-1, 3-0 match set and has now failed to surpass the fourth round of the grass court Grand Slam tournament for the fourth time in a row. Zvonareva looked extremely engrossed in her own game that she did not even notice anything about Jankovic’s injury trouble. All through the game, she was seeing trying her level best to win the match points on all possible chances.
“Frankly speaking, I was not interested whatever was happening on the other side of the court”, said the Russian player, Vera. I had no idea until Jelena asked for the trainer on the grass court, she added.
According to the 21 seeded player she clearly does not know what actually was troubling Jelena during her match at the All England Club. However, she prayed for her speedy recovery while keeping her fingers crossed by saying that she hopes there is nothing major as far as her health is concerned.
Jankovic’s departure implied that the grass court Grand Slam stays the only major tournament where the normally sparkling Serbian tennis ace has fell down to make her way into the semi finals.
On the other hand, the winner Zvonareva will meet Kim Clijsters for a battle in the semi final match of this year’s Wimbledon edition.
Talking about the William’s sisters, both the top seeded players had a smooth sailing so far in all their clashes on the grass court. However, the second seeded Venus Williams was given a tough challenge in her 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) match set victory over the number three Australian player on court number two at the All England Club.
Groth started off the tournament pretty well, having made her way in the fourth round of a Grand Slam Event for the second time in her career. She previously reached the round number four at the French Open championship as a result of some tremendous display of tennis.
Unfortunately, her match against Venus Williams proved to be her last one at Wimbledon 2010. Venus will meet Tsvetana Pironkova for a spot in the semi final match at the All England Club this week.
On the other hand, Li Na, who is a Chinese player, has made her way into the last eight by defeating Agnieszka Radwanska on the grass court.
As far as the second seeded Venus Williams is concerned, let’s see if she can contribute in making another sister’s final this year.
