Wimbledon 2010; Graveyard of Champions
Upsets are always a part of every game. They happen every once in a while but they leave a long lasting effect on people’s minds. In the recent memory, there have been quite a few upsets in the game of tennis. It is strange that sometimes, an ordinary player puts a different flavour to the game and leaves everyone in a question. The same holds true for this Wimbledon 2010 which had quite a few such quirks.
Andy Roddick, considered the best tennis player in United States was knocked out of the game by an un-known player Yen-Hsun-Lu from Taiwan. It was quite an amazing move for Taiwanian player, who lost his four first round matches in the tournament. Yet he was able to bring himself back into the limelight after beating Andy Roddick in five straight sets. In the first set, Roddick appeared very strong and won the first set by better points. However it didn’t get Yen-Hsun-Lu down. Yen lost the first game by Roddick but he set really good tone for the next rounds of the game. He cleared every move and saved the points with great skill. The match lasted for more than four and a half hours. It was a lengthy match and actually a fight with extreme sweltering heat in the field. Yeh-Hsun-Lu managed to conquer the game with 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-9, 9-7 on the point scale. He has pushed the fifth seeded U.S. player Andy Roddick to 9th position with 3,490 points.
The more shocking upset was the match between former World Number 1, Roger Federer and Czech number 12 seed player Tomas Berdyack. World was expecting a very high performance from their favourite player but it turned out to be a disappointing game for them. Although Roger Federer had quite a good start in the tournament as he won the first round matches very easily but later in the show, he had a shaky performance. The quarter-final match was a bit tricky for both the players. Tomas Berdych outplayed him in the first round which made Federer to change the strategy of the game. Federer restored his energy and won the second set with some nice shots. The game was equalled and it was a chance for both the players to perform in a good way and he took the lead. In the third set, Tomas dominated the game by his excellent un-stoppable serves. He won the third set and was all prepared to give his best in the fourth round. Federer returned better and tried to exert pressure but it didn’t create an impression on Tomas’ game. Finally Tomas Berdych showed the door to Federer and made his way to the semi-finals.
In the women’s section, the ratio of upsets was not very high. The match between the Russian tennis princess, Maria Yuryevna Sharapova and World Number 1 Serena Williams was not an upset but surely a sweet revenge. Maria failed to gain a good reputation for her in the Wimbledon 2010.The former World Number 1, who reached the top spot in 2004 by winning three Grand Slam titles. She entered the top10 WTA ranking with her brilliant win in Wimbledon 2004. She was also the runner up in 2007 Australian Open.
This year in the Wimbledon, Maria, the 16 seeded player moved to the fourth round before meeting the hardest contender, Serena Williams. It was the same situation as in 2004 when the two players had to fight for the Number 1 position. The 17 years old Sharapova played brilliantly and defeated Willaims in the final. But in this season, Maria was not able to stand in the way of Serena. The defending champion and Seed 1 player, Serena William has a great way to influence her opponents and she has series of triumphs to her name. She was not easy to deal with at this stage. Maria did put a lot of effort but Serena took the game out of her hands.
