Wimbledon 2010; Rafael Nadal the victorious Spaniard.
Most of last year was a roller-coaster for Rafael Nadal. He might have thought for a second, winning the Australian Open might have helped him surpass the Number 1 tennis player Roger Federer, but not quite. After losing the French Open at an early stage, his departure from the Wimbledon before even playing a single match due to a serious injury really put his career at risk. His parents’ divorce the same very year left him tormented and some already started thinking if he was ever going to make a come-back.
2010 started off well for the determined Spaniard as he made a comeback in the Australian Open, but sadly had to retire from the tournament due health issues again. Nevertheless the ruthless player did not waste his time and prepared for the French Open and showed it after arriving in Paris stealing the title Swedish player Robin Söderling 6–4, 6–2, 6–4. This was his 5th French Open title making him the #1 player, finally outdoing Federer, although he was seeded second at this year’s Wimbledon.
July 5th 2010, Sunday morning was the highlight of Nadals year, as he walked with head-and-shoulders with the best player in the world and it wasn’t long when this eroded player reclaimed what he thought it was his, it couldn’t be more evident than this, his sentimental reaction, the fact one could see adrenaline running through his veins. He declared he was the best player to his surroundings after being Tomas Berdych in a straight set of 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 winning his second Wimbledon title ever.
At the end of the historic match, Rafael Nadal now was the top ranked Spaniard in the world, winning his 8th Grand Slam title, he ran around the court wearing an elated smile, performed a somersault, shouting with intensity, making his signature move by pumping his first.
He was certainly pleased by the win as it brought old memories of when he won an epic match against the magnum Roger Federer two years ago in the same very court snatching the Wimbledon title away from him, leaving the crowd in denial. It was certainly marked as one of the most melodramatic matches in tennis history.
The level of his consistency throughout the game, strategically outsmarting his fellow opponents was just to prove he was fabulous. He proved to be a king of Grand Slams after winning this prestigious event. It could not have been a finer moment for the Number 1 player of tennis, especially after recovering from injuries which led to doubts of him ever making it to another Grand Slam. The King of Clay is now the one of the youngest players ever to win 8 Grand Slam single titles in history, with his superb diligence and work ethic.
The 24 year old now accompanies legends like Ken Rosewall, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendi and Andre Agassi, all who own 8 Grand Slam single titles.
Rafael Nadal has left the world impressed, he left his past behind him and moved forward as a gladiator, returning to the place he longed for and deserved. Missing two Grand Slams in 2 years a bad knee injury, family dispute did not stop the brave soldier from coming back and conquering what was his.
It could be a dull match for some as he couldn’t face Federer in the final, but it certainly was a large for Nadal. He has written a new chapter for himself the gloomy, depressing images of when kept losing to Federer are now erased. He has climbed back to the top as being worlds Number 1 player holding 10,745 points, which indicate he is a marvellous player.
When asked how he felt about the win and what his future plans were he said:
“Right now, I’m very happy to win Wimbledon. For sure the U.S. Open is going to be one of my goals for the rest of my career. But right now, (the plan) is to enjoy the beach, fishing, golf, friends, party and Mallorca.”
After such a glorious win it seemed he was destined to win the Wimbledon this year, Rafael is not a player who is across the net who has qualified to play for a Grand title, he is bigger than ever he has created history and now is off to be the youngest star in Tennis.
