Special Report ; Wimbledon 2010 Review- History in the making

This season Wimbledon brought out mixed fortunes for tennis players. It put a lot of smiles on the faces of winners and at the same time, a feeling of remorse for those who couldn’t qualify for the next round or defend their title.

Former World Number 1 Roger Federer who remained on the charts from July 6, 2009 to the wake of this Wimbledon 2010 has now moved to Number 3 in the world ranking. This is the first time for 16-time Grand slam champion since November 2003 that he’s been brought down that low. After ruling the tennis world as Number1 for 48 weeks, his downfall started this season as he lost the quarterfinal match at Wimbledon. Now he is following behind new World Number 1 Rafael Nadal and Number 2 Novak Djokovic.

This year, in the quarter final of the French Open, Robin Sodlering proved to be a detractor and a firm competitor for Roger Federer as he won the match against him. It was the major blow for Roger Federer which held him back from following the great tradition set by Pete Sampras, who remained World Number 1 for 286 weeks in a row. Federer was unable to give a good performance and failed to create any signs of victory. In the succession of tournament, Robin Sodlering and Nadal thumped up together in the final match but victory was destined to Rafael Nadal and he won the fifth title French Open at Roland Garros.

There was a set of reasons behind Nadal’s great victory. In fact, last year he suffered from a bad-knee injury and missed the tournament. This time around, he was all pumped up for a brilliant play and to show his bright side to the world. As promised, Nadal made a great come back in the game using his professional expertise. His great potential worked out for him and he reached the final, leaving everyone behind in the game. In the final match he defeated, the runner up, Tomas Berdych and took the title again.

Tomas Berdych, who upset Federer in the earlier match, made his career’s highest move by climbing to the Number 8 spot in the world ranking. Before that he captured the 13th position in overall rating. In Wimbledon 2010 final game, he couldn’t match his performance to the level of envy but it was a big achievement for him to reach the first Grand Slam final.

The US top-gun Andy Roddick who was not successful in the last Wimbledon, had the similar story. He was dropped to Number 9 while playing against the 6 time champion Roger Federer in 2009. Federer defeated him in the fourth round of the title match.

Like there has been so much activity on the men’s side, Women are also making shocking waves in the game. The game of ranking is always on but hard work and dedication is the key to success and to keep up the good ranking. In women’s section Serena Williams is holding the top spot as World Number 1. She defeated Vera Zvonareva in straight sets and took the trophy home. The game lasted for 1 hour and 17 minutes. Serena’s performance was outstanding and she brought down her authority to the game. It was her fourth title and 13th Grand Slam title. But this year couldn’t be proved as good and fruitful for her older sister, Venus. Jelena Jankovic made a difference and pushed Venus William to Number 4 from second position. Jelena Jankovic is now at Number 2, with Caroline Wozniacki at third.

In the review of Wimbledon 2010, there have been great matches, filled with a lot of suspense, excitement and fun. Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams were the champions of Wimbledon 2010 which concluded at the ground of All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
