Wimbledon 2010: Serena Williams hoping for another trophy
The sight of a Wimbledon champion arguing with a line-judge has been applauded by few as “the coolest ever thing”. It was a finest moment for many tennis fans. However, according to Williams, it was something silly on her part and she wants her fans to watch her play for no other reason than her tennis.
As a result of her attitude in the semi-final match in America against Kim Clijsters, Serena will become the first women player in the coming week that will defend the trophy by walking on to centre court with a probation order due to her past misconducts. If her attitude lets the world number one again, she might end up with a ban on her participation in Grand Slam tournaments. Serena has been charged £100,000 which was the greatest ever financial charge for a women tennis player.
While commenting on that fine, Serena clarified that she did not keep such things in her heart. Serena believes that she has moves on and expects her fans to do the same as well. According to her, she has been able to better understand her point of view in front of the public through her book that came out last year. “We all as humans make mistakes in our respective professions and so was the case with me”, commented the American player in her book.
As a person, Serena has been seen cracking jokes, laughing and hanging out with friends during her past time. Probably that’s the reason why people do not take her seriously off the court surface. However, what matters for her as a player is that people do watch her seriously while playing tennis on any surface of the world.
Williams does not look to be very much concerned about the impact of her behaviour in America that could have destroyed her like popularity amongst Wimbledon audiences. She simply loves playing in England and is looking forwards to it in 2010. As far as the crowds of England are concerned, the American tennis ace is of the view that they are extremely organized and disciplined. They never upset a player by jumping over for autographs or pictures. Perhaps, it’s the best place in the world to play tennis with everyone being so relaxed in terms of their appreciation. People do talk about the players during a game but English crowds never bother them by coming across which Williams likes the most.
Serena’s home in Florida must be stuffed with a couple of Wimbledon trophies as she along with her sister Venus has won a total of eight titles in all. According to Serena, every corner of her home is decorated with one Wimbledon trophy.
There have been a total of four all-Williams final matches in Wimbledon so far. Venus was defeated by her sister Serena in the 2002 and 2003 season where as Serena was knocked out by her sister in 2008.
Despite being the number one tennis player in the world, she isn’t the luckiest one of her generation in term of grass-court performances. According to her, the surrounding air along with the environment at Wimbledon is an entirely different feeling that cannot be put into words in spite of the fact that she is not fond of playing on grass.
Williams won the Australian Open during the month of January which was her 12th Grand Slam title. Later, she did not play for a period of three months due to a knee injury. The number one seed made a comeback in May. A majority of the tennis players would have sorely missed Serena in the Sony Ericsson WTA tournament. However, it was a rocking time for Serena Williams as she enjoyed every bit of the free time. She was seen hanging out with friends, wearing high heels as well working on her clothing range designs.
As far as the upcoming Wimbledon is concerned, Williams is enjoying her fit and healthy form and is hoping to seize another title this time in 2010.
