Wimbledon 2010: Serena William’s lightning serves did the trick

World number one Serena Williams was asked to work harder when she had to serve during her childhood training sessions with her dad. She used to smash them at the end of the training session along with Venus Williams in order to bring some normalcy in her serves.

According to Serena Williams, “both the sisters always used to discuss a lot about tennis in general and their game in particular”. “Practising on serve never harks back to my mind now, the only thing I can think of now is gossiping and just gossiping for long”, said Serena. “God knows what we used to discuss about so much, but we never quit discussing unless my father was staring at us. After that, we used to practice on our serve and even then when he stopped staring we would again just gossip, gossip, gossip”, she added.

In spite of all the discussions and gossips, Serena Williams learnt the most important shot in the game of tennis. As a result, her training days proved fruitful for her as the American tennis ace smashed a total of 89 aces and grabbed the trophy for the fourth time in her career. She defeated Vera Zvonareva in the final match on Saturday at the All England Club in a matter of no time.

Williams, after the match said that she intended to grant the title to her serve. “It’s worth it, she said. “ At the moment, I only expect to serve in the similar manner in future matches as well. It is definitely a good spin in my life and I am looking forward to persist it in my future matches as well”, she added.

Serena Williams, who is the top ranked tennis sensation in the world from the women’s side and is ranked at the sixth place in the Grand Slam trophies list, is the most over priced athlete from the women’s side. According to Williams, she has never served with so much ease and perfection like the way she has been doing it for the last two and a half weeks.

“It feels remarkable”, she said. “I always used to trust on my powerful serves but I have never been able to depend on it to that much extent. I feel really glad as I smash all these aces. It is simply fabulous”.

When Serena served too many double faults in the earlier matches, she revolved her eyes as if responding to a poor prank. Her very next serve would normally touch the 115-mph ace. She never experienced a break point in Wimbledon 2010 as she knocked down Vera with a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Only five tennis players from the women’s side namely Helen Wills Moody (19), Margaret Smith Court (24), Steffi Graf (22), Martina Navratilova (18) and Chris Evert (18) have won more grand slams than Serena.

Navratilova along with King enjoyed the final match of this year’s Wimbledon edition 2010 from the Royal Box and viewed that Serena’s serve is simply matchless in the world of modern tennis. “It’s simply astonishing to watch her while serving”, Navratilova added.

Serena Williams from her childhood learnt how to serve well from her father and developed a lot of perfection in it after receiving training from her coach. “I have always loved Pete Sampras’s serving quality”, she said. “I even admired his stroke, the way he kind of moved his bump into it. He always used to serve a larger number of aces. That always used to inspire me and I often thought, “Wow, if I could have this man’s serving flair, I would be extremely happy”.
