Wimbledon 2010 - Williams qualifies for the final after defeating Petra Kvitova
The World Number 1 Serena Williams cruises herself to the finals of Wimbledon after thrashing unseeded Petra Kvitova 7-6 and 6-2. Defending champion Williams won a tough test in her semi-finals match against the Czech. Kvitova was playing her first Grand Slam semi-final and felt happy to be competing against the World Number 1.
The match between the two seemed one sided as the World Number 1 was competing against the unseeded. Kvitova became the first player in the tournament to break Williams serve, as she broke in the first set of the match. Both the players played some amazing shots in the Centre Court on Thursday evening and gave a huge amount of entertainment to the crowd. As the match started Serena Williams started playing some heavy shots towards the 20 years old Czech. Kvitova in response played shots of her own to retreat the defending champion. The first set came heavy upon Williams as the Czech kept head to head with her. Williams took an early lead in the first set after playing a powerful forehand volley followed by a winner. The Czech soon replied with her own magic in game 2 of the first set and level the set 1-1. Kvitova broke Williams serve at 2-2 in game 5 the first time any player ever did in this year’s tournament. As the match continued Kvitova started to show her dominance in the court against Williams. She beat Williams in three more games of the first set and led the set by 5-3. Kvitova failed to keep her winning streak high as she made three forehand errors in the next games and allowed Williams an opportunity to level the set.
The momentum soon shifted in favour of Williams as she came started playing some heavy shots on the Czech and forcing her to submit. The Czech still refused to back away and fought back vigilantly. She saved two set points against the American but was not able to stop her in game 13. Williams took the first set from Kvitova after the Czech missed a backhand shot near the edge of the line. Kvitova started the second set of the match with immense pressure whereas Williams kept her nerves up. The defending champion found the second set a bit relaxing as compared to the early set. The Czech showed some skills in the opening game of the second set and was highly appreciated by the crowd for her performance. The opening two games of the second set were won by Williams as she took an early lead of 2-0 in the match. Kvitova returned back in the next game and played her topmost game, took the point from the champion’s hand and cut the lead to 2-1. Both the players played a thrilling battle in game 7 of the second set with Williams leading the match with 4-2. Williams missed a forehand shot from Kvitova which provided her a break point in the game. The World Number 1 made a quick comeback and sealed the set with some amazing and powerful shots. With this win Williams is just one step behind in winning her fourth Wimbledon title.
The 20 years old Czech made a terrific effort but was unable to hold back the veteran Williams. After the match ended Kvitova told that she did her best in the match, it was tough competition playing against the World Number 1 and defending champion Serena Williams. Kvitova also said that she never thought she would reach such a long way into the semi-finals at Wimbledon and now she hopes that she could be seeded for the US Open. Williams will now take on the Russian Vera Zvonareva in the finals who earlier defeated Tsvetana Pironkova in the other semi-final match. The match would be tough for both players as they would give their utmost effort to win the Grand Slam title.
