Wimbledon 2010 draws Preview

Roger Federer who recently lost the number one ranking to his arch nemesis Rafael Nadal is still upbeat about regaining the number one slot, and winning the upcoming Wimbledon for the 7th time.

The Swiss player will start the defence of his title against Colombia's Alejandro Falla at the centre court.

Laura Robson, who is England’s former junior champion, will take on Serbian fourth seed Jelena Jankovic on the opening day.

Among other big names in action on day one will be, the 5 time champion Venus Williams, while her sister and the defending champion Serena Williams will start her defence on Tuesday.

In men’s event, Britain’s only hope in the grand slam, Andy Murray, and recently crowned French open champion Rafael Nadal will also be action on the 2nd day.

Defending champion Roger Federer has no doubt that once again the biggest challenge for him, may once again be from Rafael Nadal.

Federer said that what he saw in France was the Nadal at his best, and he certainly looks to have recovered from his knee injury. He hardly lost any games in the French open and looks like he is definitely back to his best, and can prove to be a handful.

But having said that, Federer believes his game is as good as it has ever been. He is in good shape, looking to match Pete Sampras’ record of Wimbledon wins. Federer will be pleased to take on Falla after having beaten him on all four of their previous encounters.

Federer said that he definitely wants to win his 7th Wimbledon title to equal the great Pete Sampras, as he considers Pete to be one of the greatest of all time. Being level with him would mean a lot to the maestro. Federer did go past other records of Sampras by winning his 15th grand slam last year, when he beat Andy Roddick in a hard fought Wimbledon final.

Earlier, in an interview Sampras had he has no doubt that Federer will win Wimbledon once again. Alternatively, Federer feels no pressure following his idol’s comments, as he said that he was being compared to the great American even before he had won a single grand slam.

“Fed Express” said that he believes his game is tailor made for grass, Ever since he debuted as a junior player in 1998, defeated Sampras in 2001 and won his first Wimbledon in 2003. He is certain that this year he has a great chance of making history yet again.

Meanwhile England does not have a single player participating in the men’s event, but the home crowd will be focused on Robson, who is the 2008 girls' champion.

The young 16-year-old received a wildcard after a number of sterling performances, which saw her, make it to the top 250 in the world. She lost to Daniela Hantuchova when she made her debut in 2009, but now has been handed an even tougher task.

Elena Baltacha, who is British number one, will be optimistic about making it past Petra Martic of Croatia in her first match. While two other British women Katie O'Brien and Melanie South will also be in action on the same day.

There is a big possibility that once again in women’s event, the Williams sisters will come face to face in the final for the 3rd year running, and 5th time in total.

The Belgian pair, Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin, is coming back from retirement this year, will be taking part in Wimbledon after a while.

Lleyton Hewitt the 2002 champion will start his campaign against Argentina's Maximo Gonzalez. The contest should be an easy opening match for the Australian, who promised a lot when he first came on to the scene.

At last a spectacular tournament is about to begin, where there are comebacks, rivalries to be reignited, a few scores to be settled and others to be made.
