Wimbledon Derby hero Blonde Snapper retired to stud
Williamhill.com Derby winner, Blonde Snapper, has been retired to stud. The black dog was all set to defend his title in the upcoming William Hill Classic at Sunderland, but his connections decided to call it a day.
The October-08 son of Droopys Kewell out of Rough Charley was last seen in the finale of Williamhill.com Greyhound Derby at Wimbledon last month.
The £125000 event saw the dashing hound upsetting the 6-4 favourite, Farloe Ironman, by 1¾ lengths. He was not in winning mood before his fantastic victory in the semi-final, in which he beat Taylors Sky by a short head’s distance to secure the top rank.
After a close triumph, Blonde Snapper was full of confidence. He perpetuated his good work and despite not being the most preferred runner in the final race, he did well to steal the show.
The 8-1 chance got crowded at the first bend, but recovered quite nicely to establish his dominance quickly after the mess. Following a tremendous effort, the Mark Wallis-trained faced no difficultly in bagging the big prize.
Mark Currell, the proud owner, announced the decision about Blonde Snapper’s retirement during the Sky broadcast from Oxford on Tuesday, June 19th. He stated that since the hound is getting no younger, it is good to end his journey on a high note,
adding that he will do every possible thing to make the rest of Blonde Snapper’s life quite enjoyable.
“We want to go out at the top – and he’s not getting any younger. If it had gone wrong at Sunderland, and say been knocked over, we’d feel terrible. We will do the right thing for him and ensure he enjoys the rest of his days,” the owner said.
Wallis added: "I'm pleased with Mark's decision - we're going out on the biggest high that you can imagine."
Blonde Snapper won plenty of big events during his long career. Prior to his wonderful success at Wimbledon, the maverick runner won Romford’s Golden Sprint.
He maintained the highest standards of speed and stamina since his debut in April 2010. During his fantastic journey, Blonde Snapper recorded 22 victories and majority of them were in the open races.
