Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, home of nonstop racing excitement
Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium stages plenty of major and minor events every year. Without a shadow of doubt, it is one of the best racing tracks in United Kingdom (UK). The facilities at Wimbledon stadium are matchless, as eight thousand spectators can watch
live action almost every evening.
The stadium has a fascinating history. It started working back in 1928, when South London Greyhound Racecourses Ltd. purchased the site, and launched the business.
However, the shortage of funds became a massive problem for the track soon after its inauguration. W. J. Cearns, owner of the building fir, stepped forward and gave financial help in order to keep the stadium up and running. A lot of necessary changes were
made in the following years in order make it one of the best tracks in Great Britain.
The stadium got damaged during the World War II, but the authorities quickly reacted to the situation and built a new grandstand to replace the broken one.
In every season, the track hosts the mega events like The Grand National – Greyhounds, The St Leger – Greyhounds, The Oaks – Greyhounds, The Puppy Derby and the English Greyhound Derby. It also staged the original class race The Laurels until 1997, when
the decision was made to take the event to Belle Vue.
In May 2012, Wimbledon became the home of many major events, sponsored by William Hill. The highlight of the big meeting was the Williamhill.com Greyhound Derby, which was eventually won by Blonde Snapper.
It was a thrilling contest, as the audience witnessed some major upsets. R. Ruth was considered to be the favourite trainer to bag the top prize of £125000, but her hounds could not event make to the final.
The show was finally stolen by M. Wallis’ superstar, who shocked the 6-4 favourite, Farloe Ironman, in the grand finale. The 8-1 chance raised many eyebrows by taking a handsome lead at the first bend despite getting crowded early on.
Wimbledon stadium still has a lot to offer this year. The track is due to host a great number of fascinating meetings later this season. Everyone can experience an enjoyable night including the thrill of up to three hours of live greyhound racing. If you
are interested in quality entertainment, Wimbledon stadium is the best place to go.
