Wimbledon - Sharapova falls down to SerenaWimbledon - Sharapova falls down to Serena: World’s Number.2 and last year’s Wimbledon Champion Serena Williams takes her 2004 finals reprisal on Russia’s Maria Sharapova in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Williams with this win earned a position in the quarter-finals. The defending champion faced her biggest test as she defeated the resurgent Maria Sharapova and ended her run in Wimbledon this year. The American won a straight set 7-6 and 6-4 victory over the former Number 1. Serena will now compete against 12th seed China’s Li Na in the quarter-finals. She has already beaten the Chinese number 1 four times in their previous five meetings.Sharapova who previously defeated Williams in 2004 final looked in top form in the match but still was unable to hold back the American. Sharapova made a quick break in the first set but was unable to hold on to it and thus wasted a couple of set points. The Russian who suffered from a shoulder injury in 2009 and was unable to compete for nine long months showed full fitness in the match. Sharapova played some impressive backhand and forehand shots all around the Centre Court and William responded them back with ease. In game two Serena Williams opened with a spell of aces and tried to keep pressure on the Russian. Sharapova met an accident in game four when she fall down and injured her arm. Even though she felt pain in her injured arm but still she kept on playing the game and made it impossible for the American to score. Both the players showed their domination in the court and Williams lead the first set 5-3 with a vicious forehand winner. She later converted the score to 6-4 after she played a backhand volley which the Russian missed by an inch. Sharapova missed her third opportunity to score at 8-7 when she failed to return back a forehand from Williams. The miss ended Sharapova’s hope of winning the first set. Williams at last sealed the first set with an ace after Sharapova double faulted. As the second set started Sharapova tried to make a comeback once again but she somehow lost her concentration in the game three and later paid the consequences. Her double fault left her way back to gain upper hand on Williams. Williams kept on playing some unstoppable deliveries and waited for an opportunity from Sharapova to strike back. Williams in the 96th minute broke down with a forehand volley and sealed down the victory. The victory was highly appreciated by the American as she had not played the Russian at Wimbledon since her 2004 defeat. This year it seems as if the William sisters will once again compete in the final for the title same as previous years. Williams before the match told that she is not in her top form at Wimbledon this year. However, her victory over the former number 1 would boast up her confidence in the tournament. Her win this year at Wimbledon will bring 13th Grand Slam to her name. Williams after the match said that she was very happy with the win and the crowd supported her throughout the match. Sharapova on the other hand told that Williams served impressively during the whole match the best she has ever done. She also said that it was tough to stop William’s serves as they were coming way fast and were not easy to keep pace with.Serena Williams will meet China’s Li Na in the quarter-final. The match will be tough for the defending champion as Li Na herself looks in the top form. The 12th seed won the Aegon Classic championship earlier this month and in her quarter-final qualifying round defeated seventh seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3 and 6-2. If Williams can produce same kind of performance as she showed against the Russian in her quarter-final match then she might be able to book herself for the semi-finals.
