Wimbledon - Tomas Berdych achieves a shocking victory over Federer

Wimbledon top seed and former world number 1 Roger Federer faced a stunning defeat in the quarter-finals at the hands of 12th seed Tomas Berdych. Federer failed in his title defence this year after winning it in 2009. The Swiss lost the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-4, the biggest win for the 24 year old Czech. Tomas Berdych will now fight against Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals for the Wimbledon title.

Berdych gave his best performance against the Swiss and won a stunning game. The Czech from the start took control of the match and played some heavy shots on Federer. Berdych, with the win, becomes the first Czech player to reach the semi-finals since it was previously done by Ivan Lendl in 1990. Berdych previously defeated Andy Murray to reach the semis of French Open this year but in the end lost to Robin Soderling. With the defeat Federer will lose his ranking and will move to the number 3 spot. Later, Federer told that the reason he failed to win the match was that his back was aching and he was not able to focus during the shots.

As the first set started Berdych quickly moved forward and took an early control on the ball. The Czech played some tough shots and made it difficult for the Swiss to counter them. A forehand short volley took the Czech to a 2-0 lead in the first set. Federer made a comeback and won the next game closing the lead to 2-1. As the set moved further ahead Berdych started to show his pace in the match. The Czech started to dominate the court with his jaw dropping forehands and lightning quick deliveries. His shots started to make problem for Federer as he double faulted a couple of times and even hit the net in return. Berdych at last with a stunning backhand shot sealed the first set 6-4.

Second set of the match showed a different picture as the Swiss made a quick return to the game and started to dominate the Czech. The Swiss immediately won the first two games of the second set and it looked as if the former world number 1 had returned back to his game. Berdych tried his best to keep in the game but Federer took the game completely out of Czech’s hand and closed the set with a 6-3 win.

As the third set started it was assumed that the Swiss would once again show his dominance in the set and will lead it as he did in the previous set. However, Berdych had other ideas in mind as he played a stunning game against the Swiss. The Czech from the start of the third set started playing heavy volleys towards Federer which made problem for the Swiss to return. Berdych twice broke Federer’s serve and played some amazing backhand and forehand winners all around the court. The Swiss has already competed in 10 matches against the 12th seed and has won 8 of those matches. Federer knew that Berdych holds a threat to him; even then the Swiss seemed helpless to contain it. Berdych kept his nerve throughout the match and won the third set easily.

The fourth set seemed some problem for the Czech, as Federer started to play heavy shots and tried to save the match. The pressure soon started to shift towards Berdych but a lose shot from Federer in game eight shifted the momentum and gave an opportunity to the Czech. Berdych closed the match with his final forehand winner and booked his place in the semi-finals against Novak Djokovic. A shocking ending for Federer fans as they were not able to see their champion winning his seventh Wimbledon title.
