Wimbledon day 7 round-up

Day seven was a day of upsets in the Ladies draw but Serena Williams and Venus Williams remain on course to meet in the final.
Serena overcame former Wimbledon Maria Sharapova 7-6 – 6-4 in what was her toughest test of the tournament so far. Venus secured her place in the last eight with a similarly tough win against Jarmila Groth 6-4 – 7-6.

Three and four seeds Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic both crashed out with heavy defeats. Wozniacki lost to Petra Kvitova 6-2 – 6-0 in an incredible 46 minutes.

The No.3 seed won just six points on Kvitova’s serve and failed to create a single break point. Kvitova reaches the quarter-final of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

Jankovic the No.4 seed had to retire against the Russian Vera Zvonareva who was leading by 6-1 and 3-0 in the second set. Jankovic struggled all game and failed to hold serve once during the match and eventually retired with a back injury.

No.7 seed Agnieszka Radwanska lost to No.9 seed Li Na in straight sets on court 18. Radwanska was helpless against the powerful ground strokes of Na who continuously found the corners. Na completed a comprehensive 6-3 6-2 victory in 67 minutes.

In the men’s draw Roger Federer beat Jurgen Meltzer in straight sets 6-3 – 6-2 – 6-3 and remains on course to win a record tying seventh Wimbledon championship.

British hope Andy Murray has failed to drop a set in this years tournament and continued that run beating Queen’s club winner Sam Querrey 7-5 – 6-3 – 6-4 in a little over two hours.

Novak Djokovic overcame illness in his match against Leyton Hewitt to secure a hard fought 7-5 – 6-4 – 3-6 – 6-4 victory. Djokovic called for the trainer at 2-1 up in the third set and received medication for some kind of complaint. The Serb went on to lose the set but once the medication kicked in, he found a way a way to overcome the former Wimbledon champion.
