  2. - The first Wimbledon was in 1877 and was only as an amateur competition, men's singles was the only event. Women's singles and men's doubles events began seven years later, in 1884.

    - The first women to play in the tournament wore full length dresses, while men wore full length pants to play at Wimbledon until 1946.

    - During World War II, a bomb ripped through Centre Court at the club and 1,200 seats were lost, no-one was there at the time. Play resumed in 1946 but it wasn't properly fixed until 1949.

    - Aletha Gibson from America was the first black player to win a Wimbledon singles championship in 1957. She won it the year after too.

    - The last wodden racket used in Wimbledon was in 1987.

    - This year there are about 300 ball boys/girls, they are required to train eight hours a week for four months before the start of the tournament.

    - The lawn is cut everyday.
