Question:

WinTV HVR1100 won't record video ?

I want to record video from VCR source to then save to DVD - is this even possible with this device ?

After much messing I finally got it to accept the signal via coaxial cable (RF), I had no luck whatsoever with either S-video or Composite.

Now it will play the movie from the video but will not record it. I have excluded the destination folder from the antivirus and updated all drivers.

The message I get is

"StreamDshow Error

Startencoder: no data from encoder

Unspecified error (0x800004005)"

This, of course, is not mentioned in the device literature.

Anybody able to offer any help ?

  1. Anything associated with multimedia (video/music) is a DRM minefield ..

Chances are your hardware or software (especially Vista / DirectX 10) has decided you are trying to make an illegal copy and is blocking the data ..

The other possibility is that the data source has anti-copy 'protection' built in and is sending invalid 'framing' signals down the co-ax cable ('Macrovision' see link)

If you are determined to go ahead, use the oldest operating system you can - and remove Windows Media Player and use the oldest available version of Direct X that your hardware permits ..

You may also need to search the forums for your source hardware capabilities / modifications - the EU / UK Government has imposed restrictions on imported hardware to ensure it 'conforms to copyright laws' .. which usually means the manufacturer leaves off some components to prevent digital data 'escaping' - of course versions sold outside EU do not have these restrictions ..
