Winchester to make his fourth start of the season to add another graded stakes to his resume in the W. L. McKnight Handicap at Calder
With only three starts this season Bertram R. Firestone owned 6-year-old horse, Winchester is pointed toward the Grade 2 W. L. McKnight Handicap to be held at Calder Casino and race course on 26 November, 2011, and he will have the best credentials among 10 other participants in the lineup for the race.
Christophe Clement trained Winchester will be looking to atone for his defeat in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic where he finished and unplaced fifth on the day to winner Cape Blanco at Belmont Park on 1 October, 2011, over at one and half miles as Cape Blanco topped the distance in 2 minutes and 36.61 seconds.
Prior to the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, Winchester appeared in two starts for his connections and the results he managed to grind out would make any trainer proud.
He kicked off his season in July when he participated in the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes over at one and a half miles at Arlington Park. Winchester run over Arlington Park’s synthetic surface for the first time in his career, but like a true champion handled it to perfection.
Winchester under Cornelio Velasquez cut the field open in his spirited run in the Stars and Stripes but lost ground to Free Fighter in the dying moments of the race to him as Winchester finished second and Proceed Bee third.
The winning time of the one and a half mile long Stars and Stripes was 2 minutes and 31.98 seconds set by Free Fighter.
The Virginia bred son of Theatrical, out of mare Run Charger by Spectrum, Winchester bounced back from his narrow defeat in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Invitational at Saratoga on 13 August, 2011, at about 1 ½ miles, and mesmerized the field with his emphatic run form near the back to over haul Rahy’s Attorney who finished second and Al Khali, third, with the winning time of 2 minutes and 26.74 seconds.
Winchester in the Grade 2 W. L. McKnight Handicap will break from post number 5 in the field of 11 runners carrying a weigh of 122 pounds under jockey Joe Bravo.
