Question:

Wind farms, totally pointless??

I have noticed these big white windmills popping up all over the place and wondered why we need to produce wind and how much electricity it cost to drive them. Also, when it IS windy the people that control them seem to turn them on and when it's a calm day they have them turned off. What a waste of our money.

  1. they are wind turbines, the wind turns the blades. they don't use power to make them turn. they don't work on a calm day as there is no wind. i always thought it was fairly easy to understand.

  2. Babe if they put one on the Houses Of Parliament it'd take off.

  3. Lol you don't know what exactly one IS do you?

They are turbines that are powered by the wind to produce energy hence them being a sustainable source of electricity...........

I really doubt that you yourself contributed to them lol and next time: "google is your friend"

  4. no wind = no turn , wind = turn .

  5. Wind turbines are seen as one of the possible ways of generating clean energy and therefore helping to fight global warming. However, you're right in that there is some question about how viable they are as a way of generating enough electricity to sustain our energy needs.

They definitely do generate more energy than they consume, but probably not enough to power a country or the globe on their own.

  6. As you are already told, those are wind turbines; they produce electricity from the wind. Farm is a misnomer only to say that you find them grouped in the countryside.

This is a clean form of energy since it doesn't use fossil fuel or nuclear energy. The problem, though, is to store electrical energy on windy days, so that it can be used on calm days. One technique is to have a very large net of electrical power, hoping that when it is calm one one place, it blows hard somewhere else. Another interesting technique is to use the overflow of electricity e.g. on a windy night, to produce hydrogen. Later then, hydrogen can be used as fuel to generate electricity or even move vehicle. The only exhaust from hydrogen combustion is ... pure water. The drawback in vehicles is that it is highly explosive. New tank technologies must be developped to see those in our streets.

  7. I congratulate you on mastering the great British sarcasm.

    You win a cookie.

  8. are you thick.

  9. I doubt you can evaluate something with made up logic?

  10. I think you've missed the point completely. The wind is what makes them work and produces the electricity. It is an environmentally friendly way to get electricity. On a calm day there isn't enough wind to turn them, but they put them in windy places so they do turn as often as possible

  11. The wind blows and that turns the blades and that makes electricity from some sort of magic. When it is calm, no wind to blow the blades round and no wind

Or were you making a joke?

Oh, on a simular thing, why dont we turn the sun on at night and leave it off during the day. Its night time when we need the light not daytime afterall. Then we could save a fortune on street lighting

  12. You don't seem to understand, they aren't producing wind, the wind turns the blades and produces electricity.

I actually think they look ok better than some ugly power station.
