I think maybe your local news has hyped things up just a bit. I'm in California and there are no reports of any wind-related disasters. In some parts of the state there were gusts up to 70 mph, but this doesn't even qualify as a hurricane force wind. Also, this was in remote areas where few people live. The highest winds in residential areas are at about 53 mph. One person from Santa Clarita was injured when a tree fell on their car, but they are doing okay and there are no other reports of damage or injury.

In other words, it's a minor storm and no damage is expected. You're getting all worked up over a few strong breezes and some sprinkles.
