Windies team needs to keep battling hard: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joel-Garner-c67141 – Cricket News Update
Windies’ legendary ex-pacer Joel Garner has appreciated the national team’s recent improved performances, and advised them to continue in a similar vein during their upcoming Test series against the visiting Aussies.
“What we're watching and what we're seeing from the fellas is that the fighting spirit is coming back and I hope that we have a very good, very successful Test series,” he said.
“Based on what I saw in the one-dayers and the T20s, I, like other West Indians, would encourage the team to keep fighting and battling hard.”
The Windies recently put forth a surprising display in the limited-overs leg of Australia’s tour of the Caribbean. The tourists, ranked number one on the ICC’s ODI team rankings, came into the tour with a psychological upper-hand, having won the Commonwealth
Bank series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 on home ground.
In contrast, the Windies were well aware that they had not won a series against the Aussies since 1995, with the visitors having lost just one of their last 18 Tests against the Windies. Unlike the reigning Kangaroos, the host team occupies the number 8th
position on the ODI rankings.
However, they managed to give the visiting team a difficult time, ending both the ODI and T20I series on a draw. If their performance in the limited-overs series is anything to go by, the Tests are likely to be a difficult challenge for the away tea,, and
Garner recalled previous performances of the Caribbean powerhouse against Australia at the Kensington Oval.
“Over the years the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 have fought some bruising battles right here at the Oval. Something tells me that we will witness something really good during this Test series in the coming days,” he said, alluding to past examples of impressive
performances, such as Brian Lara’s unbeaten 153.
Garner’s sentiments were echoed by Windies coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ottis-Delroy-Gibson-c80358, who claimed that there was an air of hope in the Caribbean owing to the team’s sudden resurgent competitiveness, and expressed confidence in the fact that the team would come out fighting against
their opponents.
The Test series is due to begin on April 7 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. The second and third longer version games are scheduled to be played in Trinidad and Dominica respectively.
