Windies to go all out to win last Test: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJG-Sammy-c1382 – Cricket News Update
Despite having lost the first two Tests of their three-match series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 captain Darren Sammy is convinced that it will still be a victory for his team if they manage to emerge triumphant in the last match, due to be played at Edgbaston
in Birmingham from June 7 to 11.
“We've only got one Test match left and we'll try and get a win,” the all-rounder said in an interview with
Sky Sports. “If we come to England and win a Test against the number one ranked team it is still an achievement for us.”
“... we're going to go all out in this Test match to try to do so.”
The West Indies, currently third from last on the International Cricket Council’s Test team rankings, have long been counted among the underdogs of the cricketing world. However, the current management, with Sammy as captain and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ottis-Delroy-Gibson-c80358 as head coach,
is in the process of building a new team, comprising young inexperienced players along with veterans.
The downsides of a developing side have been apparent in the last two Test matches the tourists played against their hosts, who are currently ranked the world’s top Test team. The first match spelled a 5-wicket defeat for the visitors from the Caribbean,
while the second Test also culminated in defeat, by 9 wickets.
The younger, less experienced players on the squad have fluctuated in terms of performance. The highest partnership between openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kieran-Omar-Akeem-Powell-c71441 has been a 36-run stand, established during the team’s 2nd innings in the first
Test, while the highest individual totals they have managed are Barath’s 42 and Powell’s 33.
The veteran batsmen have been the saving grace of the team, with Sammy, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/S-Chanderpaul-c2390 all having chipped in with substantial scores, which nevertheless have not been enough to propel their side to victory.
While Sammy appreciated the effort his team had put into the series, he observed that the lack of consistency had led to their recent defeats.
“We came here promising that we would play hard and we've done that but we've not (done it for) a sustainable period of time,” he said. “If you're playing the number one team you've got to be at your best throughout the five days and we've only managed it
in patches.”
