Window Question?

Hi, I'm having an issue with my windows. I have four windows in my house that refuse to stay open. It wasn't like this when I first moved in. But, I open my window and it slides down automatically. I don't want to buy new windows because they are insanely expensive. I also don't want to prop open my windows with a book either. Anyone else have this problem? If so, how do you fix these windows?

  1. Are they sliding sashes with weights? Or crappity spring balances? (Can't tell which I prefer). Replacing them is a bit extreme when the answer is pretty simple.

If they are weights you need to add a bit more lead to the cast iron weights that run inside the frame - easily done. Or fiddle with the adjustment on the springy thingies, a pasttime invented by Beelzebub..

The windows were probably painted before you moved in which increases the friction - so that is why they were OK then , but have got worse as they have worn in.

  2. If it is a tilt-in type window, then there is a mechanism that acts as both a hinge and is attached to the spring/counterweight mechanism. Chances are that the pin has come disengaged from this. Tilt the window open and slide the bottom down as far as it will go. Tilt the window closed - problem solved.
