Question:

Window sizes in an older house?

Okay the stock windows at home depot are 35.5 inches tall, but the windows in my house (1976) are 34.5 inches tall, so I can't "frame it in" - so am I just out of luck? Also, the widths are about two inches smaller than the new windows from Home Depot. - I guess it depends on how far apart the studs are?

  1. Windows come in all shape, sizes, and material. Depending on what kind of window you have in your house, you may need to cut around the exterior of the window frame to get it out......

  2. I have an older house myself, so you can have your window opening cut to size, or you can visit your local windows factory for custom windows.

  3. You can special order windows from Home Depot to fit your space or you can cut out and reframe your window opening to fit the stock sizes. Just talk to the Associate in the Millworks Department for special orders.

  4. unless you're building something new, the stock windows will not be the right size 99.9% of the time. for a retrofit you will have to measure the  outside of the brickmold and order them according to that size.  1976 should be 2x4 construction, but check to be sure. it might also be a good idea to remove a couple of casings to see how much leeway the original builders gave between the window and framing
