Question:

Windows 98 boot disk, (floppy) can anybody help?

In my install of windows 98 I have solved all problems except for getting a workable boot disk.

So here goes.

I am having trouble getting my computer to read the windows 98 (first edition) boot disk.

I downloaded the correct thing off of bootdisk.com, clicked on the little icon that it makes and it wrote a whole bunch of files on to the floppy, but the boot disk doesn't work.

Is there something that i can do differently to make the boot disk work?

I'm very inexperienced with older operating systems so I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to making boot disks.

Can somebody give me a very specific step by step process to making a boot disk? (I need every last step down to the letter)

I keep hearing all of these things about boot images and iso and stuff but I have no clue what any of that means.

Any help would be great.

NOTE: I tried several different floppies doing the same thing and none of them work, so I know that it didn't have anything to do with a bad floppy.

so to make a long question short, how do I make a windows 98 (first edition) boot disk?

  1. It sounds as if you've done it correctly, downloaded it from the right place, written the files, but MANY MANY machines now ignore the floppy drive as a boot device to speed the bootup time, so either change your boot order (F12 in newer systems for a one time boot order change, or log into the BIOS and change it so that the floppy is the first boot device) and try that.

  2. To create an MS-DOS startup disk

The MS-DOS startup disk you create will allow you to boot into MS-DOS.

Insert a floppy disk into your computer's floppy drive.

Open My Computer, and then click the floppy disk drive to select it.

On the File menu, point to the name of the floppy drive, and then click Format.

Under Format options, click Create an MS-DOS startup disk.

    Click Start.
