Windows Counterfeit help?

My father bought a computer from a friend and recently when it automatically updated it says we have a counterfeit version. I do want to get a genuine version but will I lose all my information when once it's installed? Do I also turn off automatic updates until we get a genuine version?

The notice that you have a counterfeit version should give you a link to options for correcting.  One of these options is to purchase a legitimate license key from microsoft, which you can do right from their website.  Then all you have to do is enter the key on your computer (instructions are available on the site) and your computer will be legal without the need to re-install.
