Question:

Windows Media Player making popping noise

My WMP makes muffled popping noises while playing audio. I've looked through all troubleshooting pages but none of them match the problem I'm having. I've found remedies for clicking noises, scratching noises and no audio at all but nothing describes the muffled popping noise that I get. The noise is constant and there are about 2 pops per second. I did the sound test and all that stuff but it didn't do anything. Is there a comprehensive troubleshooting page that I can go to that can maybe provide samples of the noises I'm getting so I can match it and find the correct solution?

  1. If your running windows vista do the following. Type in "regedit" (without the quotes) and run the regedit.exe

Next go to the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >SOFTWARE >Microsoft>MediaPlayer

When your there. Right click on MediaPlayer or highlight it and delete that registery. Then after that restart the computer and go play a music file inside the library and it should work. you see Windows Media player is a VERY important system file in vista. so it practicly wont run without Media player. So when you reboot and Windows Vista doesnt see the MediaPlayer registry, it takes its back-up copy of that registry and rolls it back to factory default on it. But nothing will be deleted. I hope I helped because I had the same problem today and last week and I did this and it got fixed. Without anyproblems.  Oh and if your running Windows XP or lower, all you have to do is uninstall Windows Media Player and reinstall from the microsoft website.

If this didn't help you then contact microsoft.
