I'm downloading 3 different .avi films and when I try to preview any of them, WMP gives me a message saying: ''Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play.''

What do I do?

  1. There are several media players and they all need different codecs etc.

One needs this,  one needs that and another one needs this and that.

Makes you crazy, or better it could drive you crazy, but fortunately there is a media plyaer, with its own codecs and plays therefore all video file types. inc. wmp. .avi, flv, divx. .mov and many more

just go to preferences   -- others  --  select all

    File Types   -  Codec

  2. AVI files require the DIVX codec.  You can download it from:

    http://www.divx.com

  3. try this player

  4. if u update ur windows media player if not use either realplayer or vlc media player....these will make play...
