Question:

Windows Service Pack 3?

Ok I am usually the one that Answers questions instead of asking. I like to think I am knowledgeable on computers BUT I am a tad confused on the new service pack.

SHOULD I UPDATE TO 3 from 2? What are the benefits of doing so?

If I decide not to update, how can I get rid of that icon on the task bar informing me of updates avaliable? Closing it, right clicking on it, or just not looking at the icon, do nothing, it is still there (and knowing it is not suppose to be there other than informing me of updates, and being the perfectionist at heart, it BUGS me being down there) how can I disable that one Update if I dont want to update?

Thanks for the help

  1. it is Windows XP Service Pack 3, not Windows Service Pack 3. just install the update. if you want to turn off automatic updating, go to control panel-> security center -> automatic updates. you can find your way from here.

  2. i have just installed it today.....it took over 1 hour to install but it seems to be working ok...........have not noticed any differences but computer seems stable.................if i have any problems it can always be uninstalled using add and remove programs

  3. If you decide not to update to SP3 you will only get rid of the icon in the taskbar by right clicking My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates and Turn off Automatic Updates.

In many cases, there are a lot of updates for SP2 with 0Kb and 0 mins, which I had  aproblem with along with many others.  I downloaded SP3, but to do so I had to turn off my firewall and antivirus while it downloaded and installed.  I then rebooted which turned my protection back on went to Windows Update, completed any others that were there and then turned Automatic Updates back on.

Smooth running since. SP3 contains ALL of the SP2 updates as well as others, so now SP2 updates of 0Kb are now ignored.

The benefits of upgrading are having ALL of the previous fixes installed and some new ones, giving greater stability.
