Windows Update equals virus?

I know this may sound stupid and please don't laugh at me but is it at all possible that updates you download and install from windows update have viruses attached to them? Because today I was downloading updates and when they finished I restarted my computer and it had major issues. The icons and everything on the desktop was larger than usual, I couldn't do anything except left click on things and view the menu that came up. I got my computer back to normal (after working at it for an hour) but is it at all possible that there was a virus? Oh and by the way save the talk on anti virus programs because I have Norton and it was on.

  1. No not really. The only possible way that can happen is they patch one flaw then there is two more flaws with the patch they just released. They call this the famous patch for a patch fix.

  2. What most likely happened is that Windows Update gave you new video card drivers. Whenever you update the video card drivers on a computer it is not unusual for the aspect ratio to get all out of whack. I would not be too concerned.

  3. No. And don't be too confident with Norton. Everyone I know using it has now dumped it for systems (mostly free) that work.

  4. There is now way in heck that the updates you download from windows update are viruses...

sounds like somone/something has changed your size of your icons... just go back into the control panel and change a few settings.

I recommed spybot and spyware blaster to stop spyware doing this...

  5. No, if you are going to the official Windows Update page then there is absolutely a 0% chance of catching a virus from there.

The thing is that viruses can disguise websites to look like other ones, such as Windows Update.  You have to be careful about where you go or use a program that can help:

    McAfee Site Advisor:

What happened more then likely was that Windows Update downloaded either SP3, a display driver update, or might have just messed up with something.  Either way nothing serious to worry about if you got it working again.

  6. I don't think you have a Virus what happens sometimes with Windows updates is that they download patches and other important updates  and put things on your computer to make Windows better but sometimes these updates can cause problems to your system this is why you are able to uninstall an update if you feel it's causing a problem. You don't have to install everything Windows wants you to install you can set Windows updates so that they prompt you first before downloading anything this way you can decide if you want the download.

  7. No ... if you have a virus, it didn't come from Microsoft's windows update.

The large icons usually occur because a new video driver was downloaded/installed and most likely it didn't load/work forcing you to be in 640x480 vesa mode.

  8. No, it's not possible. Try a system restore. It was just mere coincidence that spyware or viruses raised their ugly heads around the time you were updating your computer.
