  1. Microsoft Word is a part of Microsoft Office which is a separate software from Vista. Vista is just the operating system.

Other than notepad you get wordpad free with Vista.

Alternatively you can try this site for a comparable package:

    http://www.openoffice.org/

  2. Windows Vista is a line of operating systems developed by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, Tablet PCs, and media center PCs. (From Wikipedia)

Vista is only an operating system. Softwares like Word don't come with vista because it's not a default windows software like notepad is. However, depending on where you buy your computer/what computer you buy, Word may come with your computer.

  3. It comes with WordPad program. But, its limited compared to a professional version from microsoft office or staroffice (openoffice).

You can find it under the Accessories folder.

  4. Notepad ships with Windows, and is a decent plain text editor, with no formatting.

Windows also ships with WordPad, which does text formatting, but not so much layout. It works well for writing reports, etc. for school that don't require much formatting beyond fonts.

OpenOffice.Org is an open-source (free) alternative to the Microsoft Office suite, which has most of the same programs and capabilities.

AbiWord is another open-source (free) word processor, which is just a word processor (no spreadsheets, etc).

If you want the full office suite, go for OpenOffice, but if you just want a word processor, go for AbiWord.

  5. no but check out open office it's free and a lot less expensive
