Question:

Windows Vista Home Premium Networking?

I recently purchased a new router (WRT310N) because my old Linksys (WRT54G) died. I set everything up and secured my network fine, but I cannot get file sharing to work properly. I am using the same computers as I did before (both running Vista Home Premium) and I have checked my settings a thousand times and they match what Microsoft online says (enable network discovery and file sharing, put them in the same work group…etc). Each computer displays my network printer, the router, and itself, but it won’t show my other computer. What is wrong?

Additional Info: I am using Windows Firewall and my network map shows the other devices, but I cannot access them.

  1. My first stab would be to (at least temporarily) disable Windows Firewall and try accessing your shares.  You might also look in the Windows security logs on the machines to check for any access related messages to point you to the problem.  Look under the Administrative Tools in Control Panel for Event Viewer and select the Security Log option.
