Question:

Windows Vista problem - Help?

Hi Guys,

I have had Windows Vista Home Premium on my desktop for a few months now and when I logged on this morning it came up with the windows activation box which gives me the 3 options:

- Access your computer with reduced functionality

- Type a different product key

- Contact dell to help resolve the problem

Now I would obviously just type the serial number back in but i cant find the CD case it came with. I don't mind having XP again but I am not sure how I can load the XP operating system when I am unable to get onto the desktop.

I have tried the system restore just after I turn the computer on but that is not working either.

Is there anyway I can change the setting so that the computer loads using XP instead of Vista (remember I am unable to get onto the desktop) or maybe another way? Anyone please help me with this?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

  1. Ring Dell they will 24hrs service i think. Unless you have a dual boot there's no way access Xp. If you do have the dual boot that is two or more OP systems on your computer there will be a option at the start up to run with Xp or vista. Start up being when you turn on the computer and there will be a count down from 5. Once your on xp there is program that will change all the things with the bios to set it to start with xp instead of Vista untill it's fixed. the link I have put on will show what i mean by the start up http://computerhaven.info/forum/tm.aspx?... and links to the tools needed to change the start up.

  2. It sounds like the system came with Vista installed, if it mentions contacting Dell.  The key should be on a sticker on the back or side of the computer itself.  Have you tried contacting Dell for help?  They may be able to look up your account based upon the computer's serial number and give you the Windows key.
