Windows Vista won't start after sleep mode

I have Windows Vista Home Premium. Sometimes (not always, just that wonderful "intermittently")when I put it into Sleep mode, it will not start or respond when I come back and move the mouse, press Esc., or power off & on to wake it up. I did have the computer connected to a KVM switchbox but unplugged all peripherals, plugged in just the monitor, mouse and keyboard directly (no network connection either) and still when I powered it off and on it would not start. I got a screen that showed three different F keys to press to do three different functions (can't remember now what they were but it was a basic screen) and the F keys were not recognized. Unplugged everything, including power, let it sit overnight, then plugged it back in and computer started with the message: Resuming Windows. The hard drive worked for a bit and then the desktop came up - NOT the user login screen. Do you know of any fixes. All Windows updates are current and McAfee is up to date. Thanks for your reply,Vikki
