Question:

Windows XP Professional problems - help!?

Last week, my computer crashed when uploading the most recent Windows update. The PC Technician (who is a contractor) had to reinstall my operating system. After he did this, everything on my computer screen seems infinitely smaller. It's really bothering my eyes. His only solution was to make the font larger by changing the size in the Control Panel/Display. Although that helps somewhat with the font, everything else is still much smaller -- icons, documents, everything.

Is there anyway to get my screen back to the way it used to be?

  1. There are a couple different methods for making things larger on a computer screen, the first is using magnification like your tech did, but the easiest involves changing the screen resolution.

Screen resolution is controlled by going to your "Display" control panel (or right clicking anywhere on your computer desktop where there's no icon), then clicking on the "Settings" tab at the top.

You'll see a mini representation of your monitor, under which is a bar labeled "Screen resolution."  Sliding the bar to the right increases your resolution which basically allows you to fit more information on your screen at one time, but shrinking it all to make it fit.  Sliding the bar to the left lowers the resolution to the opposite effect.

The vast majority of computer users keep their screens set to 1024x768 which is a good midrange allowing for decent information display without having to squint, but for some people the 800x600 setting is best.

When you change your resolution, hit the Apply button and your screen will flash to the new resolution.  Windows will then ask if you wish to keep the settings.  Press Yes if you do.  Press OK then to close out.

  2. It sounds like he changed your screen resolution to a much higher resolution. First, change the font size back to what it was before (hopefully you remember how you did it, just undo it). Then go to your control panel, open Display. On the far right, there should be a tab called Settings, on the lower left, there should be a setting for Screen Resolution, move the slider to the left to reduce your resolution. that should make things bigger.

  3. right click on desktop and go to properties - settings - change screen resolution to a smaller one probably 800x600

  4. Have you reinstalled your video card driver after that?

You should install your VGA driver and also set the resolution fine.
