Windows installer wont work so i can't acces my itunes - how do i fix this?

I just got a computer passed on from a friend, and im having real problems with my itunes. I was sorting out authorisation, etc. and doing okay, but now suddenly it wont let me on to my itunes any more! Every time i go to open the link the message i get is 'windows installer service cannot be accessed...' and elements of my pc, such as my start menu are running very slow, which may or may not be connected. Any help or links to suitable programs that actually download free would be great, thanks guys x

It might mean that your Windows Installer service has been disabled. Try doing the following:

>> Go to Run and type services.msc.

>> In the window that opens, on the right hand side there is a huge list of entries.

>> Look out for a Windows Installer entry.

>> When you find it, right click on that entry and select Properties.

>> Set its Startup type as Manual.

>> Click on Apply.

>> Click on Start. If it does not then look out for Remote Procedure Call entry and set it's startup type as Automatic and Start it too.

>> Now try restarting Windows Installer service.

>> It might work.
