  1. No one can access your files unless you share them over the internet, or your system is hacked, so it's safe.  As for performance, if you clog your drive (have too much data on the hard drive), it can slow down the performance of the computer.

  2. Your files are safe as long as you have a firewall setup. Windows XP comes with a built in firewall so you don't need to install anything else -- just configure it *not* to allow file and print sharing service. Also if you use a file sharing software (Limewire, Kazaa), edit its settings to disallow file sharing.

About the disk space: You need to have some space on the drive on which the Windows is installed. Greater number of files will not affect the performance much unless you leave no room for windows to operate. Windows needs about 2 GBs free space on drive C (or whichever drive it is installed).

So if your windows keeps warning you of low disk space, move your files to another partition or drive (check if you have a D drive and see if it has sufficient space).

Also to backup your data you can burn it on DVDs assuming that you have access to a DVD burner. DVD holds about 4.5 GBs of data. If you have a CD burner you can burn your data on CDs. CDs can store upto 700 MBs of data. Take a calculator out and fugure out how many you will need. Lastly, you can use a Flash Disk to backup your data. Flash Disks with 4GB capacity are available in the market.
