Is there a way to run Windows on a Mac for free?

I am getting my mac in around 1 week. And I heard that I have to have a copy of Windows. But is there a way to run Windows on a Mac without that copy?

Since I already have Windows Vista but it didn't come with a CD. Is there anyway I can do it without a copy of Windows? Or even convert my version of Windows into the Mac?

Since I am not going to go out and buy another version of Windows to run it on a Mac.

  1. Nope to all questions. You NEED to have the windows install DVD unfortunately. If you are not going to go out and buy that disc from a store than so be it. Besides, why would want windows on your mac in the first place?

  2. Which Mac and which OS?  If you run 10.2 to 10.4, use Virtual PC.  You can also use Parallels.  The newest 10.5 has a feature to run an additional OS.

Unfortunately you do have to purchase another copy of Windows.  I'd recommend XP and NOT Vista.

I am assuming that you have some PC programs that will not run on a Mac?  If you are thinking games, forget it.  You would need a power PC with some serious hardware.

  3. Duel Boot it! (it's built into Mac).

You can do so in the Utilities of Mac. It means when you start your Mac up you hold ALT and select which operating system you want to boot. All you need is a CD with Windows on it.

It's 100% free, but I'd recommend you get Parallels, which allows you to run them at the same time and you hit a button and switch between the two. It's not that expensive either!

  4. yes the new mac leopard have some thing called bootcamp witch is build in the mac so you can then instal your copy of windows in bootcamp
