how do i make the box grid thing appear

Could you be a little more specific?

If you want to draw a box,

1) Click on the button on the left that looks like a rectangle

2) Click on a colour on the bottom

3) Click the mouse on the white blank area on the screen and hold down the mosue button while dragging it to your left or right. Then let go when you have the right size

Press [Ctrl}+G or go to

Image>Zoom and click Grid.

You must have it magnified for it to work.
