Question:

Windows update problems?

Internet explorer were running really slow on my mothers computer. I tried everything and nothing worked so I formatted and reinstalled windows and it sorted out the problem. However, it's just started again and I've run virus and spy-ware scans, I've defragged, I've emptied the temporary internet files, cookies and cleared the SSL slate. I've even used the gpedit.msc to set no limited bandwidth. Again nothing is working. Now I've tried using windows update to see if there are any updates but all it does is endlessly check for updates for your computer. Any ideas? I'm all out.

  1. You need to be more patient to wait for the update checking to finish.

On my PC, it took about 20 minutes.

How much RAM do you have?

  2. Well it sounds like the problem is with Internet Explorer itself.  It could be damaged or corrupt or an earlier version that Microsoft no longer supports (mine was, but I didn't realize until later - long story - when I had a similar problem) and you have to be careful with Internet Explorer, it is so vulnerable that it could mean trouble when you have reformatted and then reinstalled and if it doesn't have all of the patches it needs.  Try downloading a new version - I have IE7 and I love it - don't download IE8.  Once you have downloaded the new version, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the existing version.  Then install the new version.  Also, it is a good idea to have an alternate browser on your computer - I have Firefox 3, which is a great browser and actually better than IE.  But I prefer IE7 (& I have never had a problem with it) because I have Windows Live Mail desktop, the Windows Live Toolbar and Windows Life Messenger, which all ties together and I need these programs.

Here is the link to Firefox 3 Free Download if you are interested:

I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck.

Edit:  I forgot to add this - be sure that your mother's computer has the system requrements for whatever version of IE you download and also Firefox 3.  You can find the system requirements on the download site.

I am giving you the link to FileHippo.com.  It has the most recent version of Internet Explorer, plus earlier versions.  I have Version: 7.0.5730.13, and this is the version I recommend; at the bottom of the "Download Latest Version" list is Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1, if you prefer that version - and don't forget to check system requirements for whatever version you choose.  As I mentioned above, don't download IE8 - not at this point - it is too new and the reviews aren't in yet.
