Question:

Windows virtual memory too low?

This error message came up about ten minutes ago. I read that if I right click on My Computer and click on Properties, then eventually go to Virtual Memory, I can put in the Initial size and Maximum size to fix the problem. But I don't know what numbers to put in. I really don't even know what the message means.

If this helps it says:

Total paging file size for all drives:

Minimum allowed: 2 MB

Recommended: 751 MB

Currently allocated: 844 MB

Oh and it's a Toshiba Satellite a105 s4054 and I have Windows XP.

  1. You are running low on harddrive space and if you run below 2MB you'll be so low that your computer will not be able to even store temporary internet files.

It is a protection to say either delete things, transfer them to back-up, or get your harddrive replaced with a bigger one.

The best solution would be buy an internal harddrive, bring your computer to BEst Buy, tell them to snapshot your harddrive to a bigger one and USE NORTON GHOST

  2. Free some space on your hard drive. Then restart.

  3. Hello From the computer Tech:

You can change to a maximum of 4096...that being said that uses 4 gig of hard drive space.

Then you need to clean up your filing system on the computer as well by doing the following:

Clean your computer cookies and temp internet files as they are really overloaded and the computer needs a file clean up...cleaning out by going to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Clean Up = Run that program and check off all items with numbers in them and hit ok...it there are a lot of big numbers there it will take some time for that to run through even up to 30 - 50 minutes. Then do 3 disk defrags under the same guide line under heading of System Tools.

This will help, have a gr8 day,

    NightHawk

  4. Try this:

    Do custom size:

    Intial size (mb): 4091

    Maximum size (MB): 4092

    Then click set

then ok, and it should be ok

  5. Most of your Virtual Memory is being used by some background

programs that is why it is shown like that

  6. reboot your system.  If you still get the message, check for spyware using spybot search and destroy or adaware.

  7. You need some more RAM go to circut city and ask buying some and how to install it.

  8. Just put in 1500mb about 1.5g if you have the extra space. and see if it works

  9. EGH, do NOT set the initial and maximum sizes to FOUR GIGABYTES. That's just stupid.

Try 1024 megabytes, if you have the free hard drive space. That's a gigabyte, which should be far and above what you will need.

  10. You can simply increase the maximum number and it will be able to use more virtual memory.

It's tweak #3. I followed the method, and it helps.

Although the best case for you is to get more ram. At least 1GB and you won't face this problem again. The laptop default is 512MB, and the low virtual memory usually occurs when it's that low.

  12. its time for you to upgrade your ram

  13. Don't set it yourself, you should just let the computer handle it automatically, it was older versions of windows that required you to take manual control over disk cache and swap file settings but not XP.

If your hard drive is near full that could also be causing the problem.
