Windows vista & MSN chat

I just got my new computer and it will not let me sign into my MSN chat , says I need to download but when I do it downloads and then it just stop and won't do anything. Help I'm a grandma and a computer newbe :~(I can't get sound or chat with vista on yahoo chat
