  1. 1. XP and Vista usually need to be "validated", which means that an additional number needs to be retrieved, either online or over the phone. If a known pirated key was used, Windows cannot be validated. You will receive occasional bubbles for 30 days, reminding you to activate. After 30 days, an annoying banner will appear on your startup and closing screens, and more frequent bubbles will appear, notifying you that you might be a "victim" of software p****y.

    2. Due to the number of false positives (people forgetting to activate, a keygen creating an authentic key, etc...), it is infeasible to try to track down people who use pirated Windows.

  2. Well, if MS does detect that your OS is hot boxed the main thing to know is, you wont get any updates automatically. It has to pass the "Authenticity" test in order to get the updates it needs to run correctly. Having a ripped copy of an OS is almost like having an open door to viruses and hackers. Beware the copied OS, they hurt more than help.
