Windows xp home edition OS

windows xp home edition OS -- windows explorer either will not open or only opens to basic screen and when click on file the screen blanks and then returns to desktop. Just started after 5 years of no problems. Only new program is Bejeweled 2. CCleaner ran and no joy.
